G' DAY MATE!!!

On July 10, 2007, I landed in Sydney Airport and cleared my way through Immigration to start writing a new and exciting chapter of my life: The Great Aussie Experience.
Living abroad can be quite interesting and entertaining, but most people never take the time to actually write down their impressions and record their memories for posterity.
"The Aussie Explorer", an on-going written account based on all my aussie experiences so far, came to life 7 months later on February 17th, 2008. Its mission: invite you to come along and feel part of the thrills and chills in the Land of Down Under!
It's a vivid journal depicting all the excitement and bliss encountered by a "young adventurer" as he unveils the myths and mysteries of this fascinating land.
Road-trips, night-outs, sight-seeing... That's just part of what you'll catch here.
So, grab a cold one and enjoy!

Cheers, Mate!

30 YEARS OF MARDI GRAS

ON MARCH 1ST, 2008, SYDNEY CELEBRATED 30 YEARS OF MARDI GRAS WITH SHEER ENTHUSIASM, SHOWING THE WORLD THAT CHERISHING DIVERSITY IS PART OF ITS VALUES.

BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

Nearly 300,000 people were expected to show up at Oxford Street to celebrate the festival's 30th edition. One of the Gay & Lesbian community's biggest events in the world today, The Sydney Mardi Gras demonstrates a sincere example of harmonious coexistence of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. Although it is an event which commemorates gay pride, myriads of straight sympathizers did attend the parade last saturday as means of supporting the gay cause or simply to have fun.

This year's edition was very unique since it recalled the festival's debut back in 1978. However special the first episode might have been for its symbolic importance for the GLS community, it was also marked by an extreme violent clash between demonstrators and the police. According to organizers, this year's Mardi Gras was all about looking back at the event's origins.

Although the festival was created with a strong political intent back in the late seventies, some members of the Sydney GLS community feel that the festival's representative voice has worn out throughout the years to become simply a massive party.

No matter what the outcome, the 3oth Anniversary of Sydney's Mardi Gras was marked by an interesting parade and a great cheering crowd!

COASTLINE DRIVING PASSION

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD IS HOME TO ONE OF VICTORIA'S GREATEST ADVENTURES. IT'S A PERFECT BLEND OF FABULOUS SEASCAPES AND EXOTIC WILDLIFE.

BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

Located in the great state of Victoria, Australia, between the cities of Geelong and Warrnambool, lies a sinuous and adventurous path in memory of all those Australians who served in World War I, also known as "The Great Ocean Road". This giant asphalt snake cuts through one of Australia's most beautiful and vibrant coastal landscapes, inviting drivers to keep the gas pumping and their wheels turning as to discover more of its wonders.

Throughout the extension of its 237 km, the "GOR" will give its guests many precious gifts to stare at - specifically the section between the cities of Anglesea and Apollo's Bay. However, the greatest thrill to the eye may take place near Port Campbell. That's where The Loch Ard Gorge, The Grotto, The London Arch, and the world famous 12 Apostles are located. Indulge your vision with a sample of mother nature's finest state-of-the-art geological aesthetics! Drivers, there's no need to worry!!! There are plenty of parking spaces along the way, so that you may pull over, stop and get some amazing sight-seeing time for yourselves! Contemplate these sandstone rock formations for as long as you can and be sure to photograph! Take your time and click all possible angles... Perhaps another picture with the sunset behind "The 12 Apostles"? Maybe you and your mates may team-up and ask another tourist for a helping hand to click that special moment. What do you think? Trust me, you'll be standing in awe and chances are you'll be clicking the same rocks several times. Nevermind! Be sure to have enough batteries and extra memory cards for your digital camera. If you're a traditionalist, be sure to have extra film...

Are you the daring type? There are paid helicopter tours which fly you over these magnificent beauties. Prices are located in the rental agencies. Don't hesitate to ask what are the different options availble.
MY TRIP:
My private adventure in The Great Ocean Road took place in December 23rd, 2007. This road trip was unique in many ways. My sister Pat, and my brother-in-law, Fábio, flew all the way from Brazil to visit my brother Guigo and I. It had been 6 months since the last time I saw them, and I really wanted to do something different to seize the moment.

Our trip began early in the morning, at the Car Rental Agency. We rented a compact car and hit the road at about 9:30 in the morning. Our first milestone would be the city of Geelong, home to The Cats - the 2007 AFL Champions. Reaching Geelong is quite simple because you pretty much just drive straight ahead on the same highway until you get there.

Once you reach Geelong, you drive around the city where you get an exit leading to the Great Ocean Road. Our first major stop for sightseeing was “Bell’s Beach”, the world famous surfing point. Although we hadn’t dipped a single toe into the ice-cold Pacific waters, we experienced a serious adrenaline rush just by contemplating the gigantic waves crashing on shore. Although we hadn’t brought boards and wet suits along, we were quite able to sense what surfing could’ve felt like.
Even though we were kind of frustrated for not having surfed, we continued our sacred crusade along the victorian coast. A couple of hours later, we were blessed by a gracious appearance: a Koala bear hanging on an eucalyptus tree. I pulled the car over and we all had a glimpse of this lazy marsupial. After taking several pictures of the sleepy creature, we all jumped into the car and got back to the road.
The Koala had redeemed our sour feelings for not having surfed that morning. We were feeling much lighter and enthusiastic about the other surprises that were yet to be discovered.

The climax of our trip took place when we reached “The 12 Apostles Marine National Park”. I had never seen something so overwhelming in my entire life. These ancient limestone formations, which rise from the sea, are one of God’s finest works. A group of 6 giant rock stacks that were sculpted over thousands of years of laggard erosion, adds charm and mystery to an already magnificent view.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS???

THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2008 WAS MY VERY FIRST CONTACT WITH A GRAND SLAM COMPETITION. THE CENTENARY TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP IS AN EXPRESSIVE MANIFESTATION OF A SPORT GENRE WHICH REVEALED GREAT TALENTS OF THE CALIBRE OF ROY EMERSON, KEN ROSWELL, ANDRE AGASSI AND ROGER FEDERER.
BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel
On January 21st, 2008, a series of fanatic fans gathered in Melbourne Park to witness yet another edition of the greatest tennis event in the Asia-Pacific region: The Australian Open. Luckily, I was one of these fortunate enthusiasts who would be cheering crazily for one of tennis greatest phenomenons to date: Mr. Roger "Fedex" Federer.
On a typical summer day, with intense heat and air humidity, the city of Melbourne was prepared to stage a series of great quarter-final confrontations. The matches of the day involved renowned names such as: Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovitch, and of course, "Mr. Fedex". All of these matches where quite impressive and depicted moments of sheer excellence with plays which where executed to be immortalized and placed in the high altars of tennis' hall of fame.
One of these matches was between Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych. Although the number #1 seeded of the world wasn't in one of his most inspired days, he was able to deliver quite a spectacle, subduing the czech 3 sets to 1. However, one of the most interesting performances delivered on Rod Laver Arena didn't come from the court, but from the crowd. An enthusiastic group of czech supporters fueled the match with their supportive cheer, which encouraged Tomas not to give up.
In the end, talent overcame passion and Roger Federer made it once again to an Australian Open semi-finals. As for me, I may say I became an even bigger tennis fan, probably one to be immortalized in the annals of Grand Slam History...

WHEN IN NIMBIN...

THE PSYCHADELIC, LOST IN TIME, HIPPIE NATURED TOWN OF NIMBIN IS A MUST SEE FOR ALL THOSE TRAVELLERS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING MORE IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER.

BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

Have you ever been to Australia? Have you ever surfed the mighty waves at Bell's Beach and Surfers' Paradise? Have you driven through the sinuous roads that form the Great Ocean Road? How about cruising in a boat through the mysterious rivers of the Northern Territory? Perhaps if you have done the above, you may call your self an experienced traveller in Aussie grounds. However, there's a little city in New South Wales where the "Mountains touch the sky" and where time seems to have stopped. It is NIMBIN, a small country town with approximately 2.000 settlers living the "hippie dream" in the wake of the 21st century!!!Nimbin is a fantastic bucolic experience for those back-packers who are curious to discover the more obscure grounds of Australia. For those who are willing to "drive the extra mile" in search of something genuine and mesmerizing. If you have never believed in time travel, you better buckle-up, sit back and enjoy the ride because NIMBIN will take you there!A much curious fact regards the reputation of the city: NIMBIN is the only city in Australia where the use of marijuana is tolerated. In fact you can light yourself a nice fat reefer with the best local weed! Got the munchies? Well, don't you worry! Because there are lot's of coffee shops around to satisfy your food cravings!I would strongly recommend passer-bys and back-packers to stay at the RAINBOW RETREAT (75 Thornburn Street,Nimbin, NSW, ph: 02 66891262), an incredible nimbin accomodation which is located in a near-by farm. Be sure to talk to Doug, the proprietor. He'll get you started and show you around the premises! He'll also give you good tips about where to eat and go in "Freakin Nimbin", as he likes to call it.Well, I'll tell you one thing: if you want to experience the roots of Australia, well you better get your arse in Nimbin! You'll have the time of your life there! Let the sunshine! Cheers!
